Classical Music Festival in Cortland
There will be a Classical Music Festival on Sunday February 24, 2008 from 1:00 - 5:30pm at the Blue Frog Coffeehouse, 64 Main Street in Cortland, NY. It will feature music for brass, string and vocal ensembles, flute and piano, as well as classical guitarists and piano soloists. Enjoy an afternoon of classical music in an informal atmosphere. Admission is free.
Tom Goodman, an engineer from Binghamton, is new to the festival stage. Originally from Rochester, he has been studying classical piano in his spare time since the age of eight. Currently he is studying with Dr. Jairo Geronymo at Ithaca College. Other newcomers include students David and Jonathan Fenwick who will be performing on cello, violin, guitar and piano.
Music will begin at 1:00pm with a performance by the Crown City Brass, with Mark Baxendell and Brian Shelley (trumpets), Terry Martens (French horn), Mike Poole and Phillip Rumsey (trombones) and Cheri White (euphonium). This will be followed by Tom Goodman at the piano who will be playing works by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Scriabin and Chopin. Walt Liszewski will then play works for classical guitar by Carulli, Sor, Kuffner and others.
At 2:30, Tekla Babyak will play piano works by Mozart, Brahms, Debussy and Bartok. Babyak, a graduate student in musicology at Cornell University, gave a concert on programme music at the Homer Center for the Arts in late January of this year.
At 3:00pm there will be a performance of the first and last movements (Allegro Vivace and Allegro Giusto) of the "Trout" Quintet by Franz Schubert. This will feature Lois Pfister (violin) Marion Giambattista (viola), Jim Weiss (cello) and Garrett Beaty (bass). Lois Pfister's student, Jeremiah Hopkins, will perform the 2nd movement (Adagio) of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. Lois Pfister (violin) and Marina Gorelaya (piano) will then play works by Tartini, Schubert, Barber and Mozart.
At 3:45 Maria Mucaria (flute, piccolo) will be accompanied by Marina Gorelaya (piano) in music by Bach, Telemann, Faure and others. This will be followed by performances by students David and Jonathan Fenwick on a variety of instruments (cello, violin, piano, guitar), beginning with the Prelude from the Cello Suite in D minor by J.S. Bach. For some of these works they will be accompanied by their mother Lisa Craig Fenwick on both flute and harp. If you happened to be at the Classical Music Festival this past November, you will remember Lisa as one half of the Celtic Harp duo at that event.
At 5:00 the Madrigal Singers of Cortland High School will bring the program to a close in the performance of vocal music from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The Madrigals are under the direction of Ben Wells.
The Classical Music Festival series is supported by the New York State Music Fund established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Thanks to the NYS Music Fund, this will be the first of four Classical Music Festivals organized by Cortland Music this year.
